Perimenopause and Your Gut: What the Estrobolome Can and Cannot Tell Us

Perimenopause can be a challenging time for many women. It is the biological transition, leading up to menopause, where levels of hormones including oestrogen and progesterone begin to fluctuate. Some women can experience mild changes, but for others, these hormonal changes can trigger a wide range of physical and emotional symptoms including:

  • Vasomotor symptoms, commonly know as hot flashes and night sweats; some women also experience chills

  • Mood changes such as irritability, mood swings, low mood and depression, anxiety and panic disorder

  • Digestive Issues and water retention or bloating

  • Decreased oestrogen, which will decrease lubrication in the joints, resulting in inflammation and joint paint, as well as muscle aches and pains

  • Sleep disturbances and fatigue

  • Many physical symptoms like hair loss, brittle nails, bone loss, weight gain, headaches, decreased libido, itchiness and restless leg syndrome,

Perimenopause will affect approximately half of the population, however, there appears to be very little in the way of readily available information or education about it. This can leave many women feeling confused about what is happening to them both physically and mentally, during this time of transition in their midlives.

As a midlife woman myself, I have been very interested in researching perimenopause and the effects it has, as well as the ways to support myself during this transition. I have been surprised to learn that there are around 34 commonly recognised symptoms associated with Perimenopause, and even more surprised to discover that I have experienced most of them over the past few years – yet my GP told me that I was too young to be in Perimenopause and instead wanted to prescribe medication to help with my panic attacks and anxiety.

After doing some research of my own, I discovered many women my age have had similar experiences. I decided to investigate the most common or well-known symptoms of perimenopause, and see what exactly was causing them, and how the symptoms could be reduced.

I learned that there’s another fascinating part of the menopause conversation that receives far less attention:

Your gut.

Scientists are increasingly exploring the relationship between the trillions of microorganisms living in our digestive system and our hormones. And within this enormous microbial community is something particularly interesting when it comes to oestrogen: the estrobolome.

So, what exactly is it?

While we tend to think about oestrogen as something controlled entirely by the ovaries, the story is more complicated.

And that’s where your gut becomes particularly interesting.

The estrobolome is the collective term used to describe the gut microorganisms, and their genes, that are capable of metabolising oestrogens.

Think of it as one specialized function within the much larger gut microbiome. After oestrogens have circulated around the body, they are metabolized in the liver. Some are then conjugated and excreted into the gut through bile.

Certain intestinal bacteria produce enzymes that can deconjugate some of the oestrogen metabolites. Once deconjugated, some oestrogens may potentially be reabsorbed through the intestinal wall and returned to circulation rather than simply being eliminated.

In other words, your gut microbiome participates in the way your body processes oestrogens.

That doesn’t mean that your gut ‘controls’ your hormones. But it does demonstrate just how interconnected our digestive and hormonal systems can be.

Why is the estrobolome interesting during perimenopause?

During perimenopause, ovarian oestrogen production becomes increasingly variable before ultimately declining after menopause.

Researchers are therefore interested in whether changes in the gut microbiome and estrobolome may interact with hormonal changes during this period of life.

There is evidence that menopause itself is associated with changes in the composition and diversity of the gut microbiome.

But this is an emerging field.

We don't yet know enough to say that changing your microbiome will “balance your oestrogen”, nor should any food or fermented drink be presented as a treatment for hormonal symptoms.

What the research does give us is another compelling reason to look after the ecosystem living inside our gut.

Feed the ecosystem, not just one microbe

A healthy microbiome isn't about finding one magical bacterial strain.

It's about creating an environment in which a diverse microbial community can thrive.

One of the most useful things you can do is eat a varied diet containing plenty of plant foods and dietary fibre.

Think wholefoods:

Vegetables. Fruit. Beans. Lentils. Whole grains. Nuts. Seeds. Herbs and spices.

These foods provide different fibres and plant compounds that interact with our gut microorganisms.

And then there are fermented foods and drinks.

This is where Tibico Water Kefir fits in.

Water kefir is a naturally fermented drink made using water kefir cultures containing communities of bacteria and yeasts.

During fermentation, these microorganisms transform sugars and produce the complex flavour that makes water kefir so refreshing.

Fermented foods have become an exciting area of microbiome research, although it's important to distinguish between a fermented food containing microorganisms and a probiotic with a specific clinically demonstrated health benefit.

They aren't automatically the same thing.

And we should be equally clear about the estrobolome:

There isn't currently good evidence that drinking water kefir specifically changes the estrobolome, raises oestrogen or treats symptoms of perimenopause.

That's not the claim we're making.

Instead, Tibico can form part of something much bigger: a varied, plant-rich, gut-conscious way of eating and drinking.

An alcohol alternative during perimenopause

There's another reason water kefir can be particularly appealing during this stage of life.

For some women, alcohol and perimenopause aren't particularly good companions.

Alcohol may aggravate hot flushes or interfere with sleep in some people; two things you probably don't need any additional help with during perimenopause.

But often it's not necessarily the alcohol we want.

It's the ritual.

Opening a bottle.

Pouring something refreshing into a beautiful glass.

Sitting down at the end of the day and marking the transition from work to relaxation.

  • Reducing bloating and inflammation. Hormonal fluctuations can slow down digestion and lead to bloating. The probiotics and gentle acids in Tibico water kefir can improve digestion and reduce inflammation, as well as easing gastro-intestinal discomfort.
  • Reducing hot flash frequency and anxiety. By reducing inflammation and enhancing gut-health, Tibico water kefirs can positively impact mood, reducing anxiety. Balancing the estrobolome can help reduce oestrogen fluctuations, which will also decrease hot flash frequency and intensity, as well as the associated sensations of anxiety and panic. This can, in turn, help improve sleep disturbances and irritability.
  • Bone Health. Declining oestrogen levels during perimenopause can lead to increased bone resorption and decreased bone formation. This can significantly raise the risk of osteoporosis. In conclusion, it’s clear that there is still a lot of research to do in this area, and whilst Tibico water kefir is not a direct cure for symptoms of perimenopause, what it can do is provide a naturally fermented, dairy-free drink that fits beautifully into a varied, gut-conscious lifestyle — while offering a refreshing alternative when you want something more interesting than water or an alternative to an alcoholic drink.

And perhaps that's a much better

way to think about nutrition during perimenopause.

Not one miracle ingredient. But lots of small, positive choices that add up.

The Tibico approach to perimenopause

Feed your gut.
Eat a diverse, fibre-rich, plant-forward diet.

Think fermented.
Include a variety of fermented foods and drinks if they suit you.

Rethink your drink.
Swap some alcoholic drinks for something refreshing and alcohol-free.

Look after the whole you.
Prioritise protein, fibre, movement, strength training, sleep and bone health.

Enjoy the ritual.
Because looking after yourself should include things you actually enjoy.

Tibico Water Kefir — a little daily fermentation for a changing you.

From my own personal experience, I have found that drinking Tibico water kefir daily has certainly ‘taken the edge off’ my anxiety and my panic attacks are now few and far between. My sleep is better and the hot flashes have reduced in frequency. Whilst there may still be some mild symptoms, they are no longer debilitating, and I can cope with those that I do experience.

One of the worst things about perimenopause, for me, was the lack of information and support available to me. So, I hope that this blog can in some way help someone else who may be confused about what is happening to them.
